Thimble

I have a few back-burner projects, and some front-burner-on-high-heat projects that are well suited for Tumblr. Thimble looks like a promising tool to streamline all those minor edits and CSS tweaks.

I estimate that I’ll save Tumblr $300,000 in bandwidth fees from not continually copy/pasting into the customize page.

A few of us met up at Southland tonight to fix up bikes that have been donated to be given away. Some bikes got new life. Others became future frankenbike parts.

Some of these bikes will go to dudes who are getting back on their feet and need transportation to new jobs. Others will be gifted to kids who otherwise might not get a bike.

Overall I’d say it was a great way to spend a Wednesday evening.

Nike+ settings on the iPhone

What Apple could do, in theory, is add a section to the Settings app where you could hide unwanted system apps from the home screen. But that’s un-iPhone-like. You’d then wind up with two ways to remove apps from the home screen — one for App Store apps and another for system apps. It’s simpler and more obvious for there to be one and only one way to do it, and simply leave the system apps as unremovable.John Gruber

I’m curious if John knows that the functionality he suggests for hiding unwanted default iOS apps is exactly what is currently done for the Nike+ iPod app, which comes packaged with iOS on capable devices. I’m guessing that the Nike+ app gets special treatment because it is the only packaged app that requires external hardware.

Finding and toggling this app in Settings worked flawlessly for me when I got my first pair of Nike+ shoes earlier this year. It seems like a pretty strait forward solution for other apps as well. The question is: does this solution add an unnecessary layer of complexity once it moves from a single-case exception to a behavior for all built-in apps?

For the time being, this neatnik has dropped all his unwanted default apps into a folder.

My brother-in-law made the cover of the New York Times online for his beautiful man voice. Beau is a super talented tenor, a great husband, a wonderful dad and one of the most loving people you’ll ever have the pleasure of meeting. He’s like the brother I never had, but now I do have because my sister made a wise decision in marrying him.

Congratulations Beau on being excellent at what you do!

Today we rolled out some changes to Southland’s website. I’m very excited about the subtle redesign on the front-end, the major overhaul on the back-end and where we go from here.

And for you code nerds: we’re still looking to find me a Doppelgänger. (And yes, I just used google-search-spell-check to spell Doppelgänger).

Google as a Spell Checker

I use Google search as a spell checker fairly often. Though I don’t think it’s ever been for such a ridiculous word. I didn’t find it surprising at all that Google had a spelling correction for me either.

Google truly changes the way we work. In the past I would open up a text editor to spell check a word. Now I don’t even leave the browser.

And if you’re late to the game - TROGDOR!

Door to door bike commute.

It was a tough ride today. The sun was out in full effect, not to mention the ocean of humidity. Nonetheless, it felt great.

Bike!

Thanks to the generosity of the church, I recently received the gift of a lightly used bicycle. The bike is a Giant Upland and it is in great shape for the most part. It will need new cables at some point, but out of the gate it had two tires, ten gears, a chain and a seat, so I’m pretty much in business.

Also, due to generosity of Derrick I’ve already been able to put new grips on it, as well as a rear rack bag at no cost. Oh yeah, the bike had a rear rack when it was gifted to me as well, so that’s a bonus.

I’ve already done the commute to work thing a few times. I really enjoy the change of pace, and I feel like I learn some things along the way.

Next item on the agenda for alternative transportation is a dog and some rollerblades.
